The Lumpkin County School System proudly announces that Alan Hogan is its Pioneer in Education for 2024. Pioneer RESA presents the award annually to those individuals who make a positive impact on students and education, and each of the 15 districts within its service area names its recipient.
Alan's journey began at East Tennessee State University, where he attended on a baseball scholarship and pursued his passion for education. He started his teaching career at College Park High School in Fulton County, where he taught English and coached football, baseball, and wrestling. It was also at College Park where Alan met the love of his life, his wife Julie, a fellow teacher.
After seven years, Alan moved to Campbell High School, where his passion for coaching continued. As the school merged with Creekside High School, Alan pursued his counseling degree from the University of West Georgia. He then took on a role at Northview High School as a counselor and tennis coach, leading his team to win not one, but three state tennis championships!
In 2009, we were lucky to welcome Alan to the Lumpkin County Schools' Tribe as the system test coordinator, and after two years, he transitioned to Lumpkin County High School to serve as a school counselor. During his time at LCHS, Alan established the Peer Mentor Program, a remarkable initiative that helped students build leadership skills while providing their peers with personal connection and support. This program made a lasting positive impact on our student body, fostering a sense of community and belonging among our students. I had the privilege of working alongside Alan at LCHS and was firsthand witness to the hours, dedication, passion, and purpose he put into ensuring students were college and career and life ready.
Alan’s dedication to coaching also shines through. Over an impressive 44-year coaching career, Alan won 7 region titles, embodying the commitment and perseverance that inspire both students and athletes alike. Even after retiring in 2021 with an amazing 47 years of service, Alan remains an active presence, volunteering at football games and continuing to work with our Lady Indians Tennis team.
Alan and Julie raised two wonderful sons, who now live in Brooklyn, New York, but Alan's extended family has always included the countless students he mentored, coached, and cheered on over the years. His genuine care and dedication to building relationships have made him one of the most beloved figures in our community.
It is with great pride that we recognize Alan Hogan as the 2024 Pioneer in Education. Congratulations, Alan!
